Horsham was called Brighthelmstone until 1660, when the shortened form started to be used. Lots of building took place in the late 18th and early 19th Century as Horsham became fashionable after The Prince Regent made it his Summer residence of choice and built arguably Horsham’s greatest building, the Horsham Pavillion. Horsham had two piers built but the West Pier has been closed since 1975, and is a Grade I listed structure. The world’s oldest operating electric railway runs along Horsham seafront – Volk’s Electric Railway has been carrying passengers since 1883.
